Over twelve million Americans receive acupuncture treatments and this number is growing quickly. The United States government has allocated over $1 million in studies of the effectiveness of acupuncture. The profitability of an accupuncturist depends on effective marketing,  maximizing billable hours and solid patient relationships. The industry is labor-intensive. According to the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Alliance, the number of licensed acupuncturists nearly tripled in less than a decade: from 5,525 in 1992 to 14,228 in 2000.

Patient services account for 95 percent of the total industry revenue. Additional sources of revenue include sales of medical devices and equipment, vitamins, nutraceuticals and OTC items. Acupuncturists, as with all healthcare providers, seek new and innovative product development to improve healthcare of their patients.
